What Success Looks Like In This Role

  • Lead SEO Strategy Development: Own the strategic direction for client SEO initiatives, personally leading the most complex and high-impact accounts while setting the standard for the entire team across:
    • Keyword research
    • On-page optimization
    • Off-page optimization
    • Technical SEO
    • Local search
    • Link acquisition
    • Schema implementation
  • Drive Execution and Accountability: Ensure strategies do not stall at the recommendation stage. Create accountability across the team so SEO strategies are executed quickly, correctly, and with urgency tied to business outcomes.
  • Tie SEO to Business Outcomes: Lead the shift from activity-based SEO to outcome-based performance. Ensure strategies, reporting, and conversations consistently connect to leads, revenue, and market share growth.
  • Establish a Culture of Testing and Improvement: Build and reinforce a test-and-learn environment where assumptions are challenged, experiments are prioritized, and winning strategies are scaled across accounts.
  • Elevate Client Strategy and Presence: Serve as the senior-most SEO voice for key accounts, leading high-level strategy and critical conversations. Build trust with clients by consistently demonstrating clarity, confidence, and impact.
  • Lead and Develop the SEO Team: Manage, mentor, and hold accountable a team of SEO Specialists and Strategists. Develop talent, raise performance standards, and create a team that operates with ownership, urgency, and strategic thinking.
  • Own Department Performance: Take responsibility for the SEO department’s overall success, including client performance, retention, team utilization, and contribution to agency revenue. Establish what “great” looks like, ensuring every strategy, deliverable, and outcome reflects a best-in-class, results-driven approach.
  • Partner on Growth and Revenue: Work closely with Account Managers and agency leadership to support new business, upsell opportunities, and retention efforts. Play a key role in pitching, positioning, and closing SEO engagements.
  • Optimize Systems and Efficiency: Identify and eliminate friction in how SEO work gets done. Improve processes, documentation, and workflows to increase quality, speed, and scalability.
  • Ensure Competitive Advantage: Maintain a clear understanding of the competitive landscape for both TG and its clients, using insights to guide strategy and positioning.
  • Champion Innovation and Market Leadership: Stay ahead of algorithm updates, SERP evolution, and emerging trends, including AI search. Proactively test, validate, and roll out new approaches that keep TG competitive.
  • Identify and Expand Opportunities: Continuously uncover new ways to grow client visibility and performance, particularly across complex, multi-location, and scalable website environments.
  • Oversee Executive-Level Reporting: Ensure reporting is clear, concise, and tied to outcomes. Equip both clients and internal stakeholders with insights that drive decision-making.
  • Represent TG Externally: Contribute to thought leadership and industry presence through content, speaking, and strategic visibility.
  • Work Flexibly: Operate with a strong, consistent presence across clients and internal teams, primarily remote, with the ability to collaborate in person at our St. Louis HQ as needed.

What Sets You Up for Success

  • St Louis-based candidates only
  • Ability to meet at TG headquarters in St. Louis, MO, as needed
  • 10+ years of SEO experience with a proven track record of driving measurable business outcomes
  • Demonstrated leadership experience managing or mentoring SEO teams
  • Deep expertise across technical, on-page, off-page, and local SEO
  • Proven ability to prioritize and execute based on business impact, not just output and deliverables.
  • Advanced proficiency in Ahrefs, Screaming Frog, Google Search Console, GA4, and Looker Studio
  • Experience leading high-level client strategy and performance conversations
  • Ability to translate complex SEO concepts into clear business recommendations
  • Experience managing multi-location or franchise SEO strategies
  • Strong understanding of local SEO and Google Business Profile optimization
  • Ability to connect SEO performance directly to revenue and pipeline growth
  • Experience operating in a fast-paced agency environment across multiple clients
  • Strong cross-functional collaboration with development, content, UX, and account teams
  • Proven ability to mentor, coach, and elevate team performance
  • Excellent communication, organization, and accountability
  • Staying ahead of algorithm changes, SERP evolution, and industry trends
  • Experience working within CMS platforms like WordPress and Shopify
  • Comfort communicating with developers and understanding technical implementation

Nice to Have

  • Schema deployment via Google Tag Manager
  • Familiarity with accessibility standards (WCAG/ADA)
  • Experience with SEO reporting automation (Supermetrics, APIs, Python)
  • Experience contributing to thought leadership (blogs, webinars, speaking)
  • Exposure to Conversion Rate Optimization (CRO)
  • Front-end or back-end development experience (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, etc.)
